What to Expect

Laying the Foundation for Total Health

In some ways, one could say that chiropractic care is a bit like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work together correctly. When building a house, if you tried to build your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually may even collapse. If you tried to build your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. These concepts apply to your body as well, and chiropractic care addresses many common reasons why people experience pain and other health issues. If something is not right with your body's foundation, than that needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our Grand Rapids chiropractic office, our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. Every patient and every injury is different. Some chiropractors expect to see you for 4 months or more, 3-4 times per week during the acute/relief care. We disagree! That is the exception, not the rule in our office. Acute relief care focuses on an accurate diagnosis and then only doing the treatments required to relieve the pain. Usually this only takes a few treatments, tapering over weeks, not months.

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care

During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning. Other chiropractic offices may tell you to expect 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months. We disagree! Most people without advanced disease need nowhere near that much care. Our bodies are designed to be healthy and God didin't design you to take two years of medication for most back problems, nor two years of maintenance chiropractic care. We'll discuss your needs based on the best scientific and clinical evidence and YOU will be in charge of what's working best for you.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing back pain or other pain symptoms, it is often important to come in for periodic chiropractic adjustments to avoid further problems in the future. Like seeing your dentist before you have a cavity, it's the same with your spine which is the only one you get in life! Usually, this common sense preventive chiropractic care only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor once or twice a year, based on your lifestyle and goals.

  • "I felt that Dr. Aamodt was honest about giving care needed. He solved our daughter's back injury in two appointments. First appt included an x-ray, which he used to explain the injury, and a manipulation which brought some relief from the pain. Symptoms were almost gone by the time of the follow-up a week later, and then totally disappeared."

  • "Dr. Aamodt, Aamodt chiropractic is the best. I have had issues that my PCP has no clue how to treat. But when I go to Dr.Aamodt he is able to quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and treat it effectively the same day I see him. He is friendly, professional and caring. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Ginger Pentinga"
